"Inn at Seaside" Motel

For our trip, we flew into Seattle and spent a couple of days there and then we drove down the coast to a place called Seaside. We stayed at this quaint little place called the "Inn at Seaside" that came complete with a pool and continental breakfast.

The reason I am giving our one night stay a whole post of its own was the uniqueness of some of the hotel amenities. We found luggage racks parked next to the elevator which made transporting our luggage to the third floor much easier than toting everything individually. In the bathroom, there were no bottles of shampoo or packages of soap. Instead, dispensers were attached to the bathroom and shower walls with soap, shampoo, conditioning shampoo, body wash, and lotion. The woman who checked us in, I presume she was the owner because she was also there in the morning supervising someone else do checkouts, seemed geniunely interested in us and was very helpful. She also offered us the use of their movie collection available for guests to use in the video players in their rooms. A unique experience to staying in a hotel and not a bed and breakfast to be sure.

After we checked out, we drove to the beach where you can see the rocks from the movie "Goonies," then traveled to the cheese factory, the outlet mall where we did a LOT of shopping, and then on to Vancouver, Washington where we spend the last few days of our trip visiting with Raegan's family and traveling back and forth across theColumbia River to see the sights and do some more shopping before flying home.

Ferry Ride

On our second day in Seattle, we took the ferry over to Southworth from West Seattle. The wind out front was pretty intense so I didn't walk all the way out to the rail to take pictures. Riding a ferry is different from riding a regular boat partially because of its size but mostly because it is attached to cables that guide it swiftly and smoothly from one docking point to another. While we were on Southworth we went out to lunch at a local restaurant/tavern (one side was the tavern with a dividing wall that had a restaurant on the other side.) The funny sign was from our lunch stop, and the pictures after that are from Raegan's camera.

Weak Ankles Have Their Ups and Downs

The biggest downside to having weak ankles is that walking can sometimes be challenging, ask my husband how many times he has had to catch me so I don't fall down, and I can wear stiletto heels, no matter how short or tall. Today I was very grateful for my weak ankles. You see, the upside to having weak ankles is that it is really hard to sprain or twist your ankle the way most people do.

I totally fell down the stairs to our basement today. The bare stares are hard and a little uneven because we haven't fixed them in the process of finishing the basement. I misstepped on one of the steps and landed with one foot bent at an odd angle behind me and my other foot landing hard on the cement in front of me. I didn't know if I would be able to stand up with the impact and angles, but to my relief I was able to stand up without any major pain. Granted, I am bruised and a little banged up, but I did not sprain my ankle or break any bones. Thank goodness for weak ankles because given the angle my one foot was bent at I totally should have experienced some real damage. Weak ankles have their ups and their downs.

Pike's Market

This picture does not do justice to the actual size of these shrimp.
I'll just say the letters in the sign are about 3 inches tall.

We also so saw "Elephant Garlic" which was at least the size of my fist. Sadly, I was too busy checking out all of the cool stuff to remember to take pictures of it.

We went to Pike's Market after we picked up our rental car and before we went to the Waterfall Garden. We watched fishermen throw fish to each other, gorgeous fresh floral arrangements, flattened glass bottles with pictures or postcards inside, jewelry, a variety of produce and fish, clothing, handmade items, decor, and so many other things I can't remember all of them.  The people who were exploring and selling at the market were interesting too. I don't know how to describe it other than I felt like I got a true taste of Seattle culture by attending the market. The best part of exploring the market our first day was the sunshine. I soon learned the sunshine is quite infrequent in the Pacific Northwest.

Reducing Sugar During Holidays

I have the hardest time being wise in my food choices around the holidays when so many sweets and candy are available. One of the things I have tried to do is reduce the amount of sugar available around the holidays. If it is not there, I do not stick as much of it in my mouth. For Easter, I knew my kiddos were already going to one candy Easter egg hunt so I (I mean the Easter Bunny) decided to not put candy in the eggs and found cute little toys to put in the eggs instead. The Easter Bunny also brought learning toys, chalk, and crayon watercolors for the family. I did give in to Peeps, but I discovered that it takes 4 or 5 peeps to get up to 110 calories so I can get my sugar fish without major caloric intake. My kids seemed more excited to discover little toys in their eggs than they have in past years when their eggs were filled with yet more candy to add to their overflowing baskets of candy.

We also did something similar for Christmas and Halloween. For the last Halloween we bought miniature card games to hand out and the year before we bought little toys. My kids still came home with a ton of candy, but it felt good not to be contributing to that abundance. At Christmas, instead of buying candy to put in stockings, I bought breakfast foods that could be eaten without heating, cooking, or milk, and raided the dollar story for other small things.

It is not easy to make these changes especially when candy is so readily available during holidays, but it certainly helps to make changes a little bit at a time. I enjoy not having as many temptations in the house.
