The Benefits of a Small Car

My car may look like it belongs in a Lego village or a board game, but I have come to really love my little car. I have brought home my washer, dryer, and kitchen stove in this car (not all at the same time, but they each fit none the less. I can fit my double jogging stroller and all three kids in the car at the same time. And, a couple of weeks ago I discovered I could put a row of water barrels behind my old washer and dryer and still fit my car in the garage. Yep, I like my little car.

Close the Garage

We have had a series of thefts in our neighborhood over the last couple of years. It only happens once or twice a month, especially during the summer, but way too often for me to feel comfortable. I have been trying to teach the children to close the garage behind them unless we are in the front yard, and for the most part they remember. When they don't I tell them I don't want things stolen and they need to help us protect our stuff from people who would decide to take it because the garage is open. We have been fortunate not to have anything taken from our garage, and then yesterday Benjamin gave me a horrible scare.

Most mornings I go for a walk with Ryan in the stroller and the big kids ride their bikes. I have even decided to let Benjamin take two laps while we take one. He's really fast! Yesterday, Benjamin decided to come home between laps and switch bikes. I was moving a little faster than usual and he wasn't home when I came home. I panicked a bit when I found his bike and scooter in the garage and no Benjamin anywhere in the house. Much to my relief, he arrived home just as I was headed out to find him. After scolding him (yes, I scolded him) for changing his riding attire halfway through his ride, I told him how bad he scared me and why. I explained to him that of all the things someone could take from our garage, the thing I wanted to protect the most was my children. I was so scared someone had come in my house and taken my Benjamin because I had not kept him with me for the entirety of our walk. I think he realized, maybe just a little, why we have rules. More importantly, I think I was reminded of how important my children are to me and why I do the things I do. And, why I feel that rules and communication are important. I am so grateful Benjamin was okay and safe after I walk.

Dishwasher End Panel

One of the things we had to buy or build during our kitchen remodel was a dishwasher end panel (a support board for the countertop) since we moved the fridge to where the drawers used to be next to the dishwasher. Thanks to YouTube and ehow.com we learned how to do it. Then we needed the materials. We had some rough plywood in the garage leftover from another project that could be cut to the right size, but Michael said I would need to "sand the heck out of it" to make it work. Wanting to use the materials we already had, and save money at the same time, I did just that.

Just the Two of Us

Bekah had morning Kindergarten this year, and so it was just Ryan and I during the morning five days a week. We found entertaining things to do.

Dressed like a "storm trooper" (according to my dad) to ride his bike in the cold.

Helping Mommy sand the kitchen cabinets.

Playing with nerf darts.

Chillin' and watchin' PBS kids (Sesame Street, Super Why, Dinosaur Train.)

Refusing to take naps and falling asleep while watching a show.

A Few Christmas Presents

Since I am posting about Christmas trees, I think it also appropriate to post about Christmas presents. Sickness, remodeling, birthdays, and baptism kind of took over my life for a good chunk of this year.

Buzz Shirt, because Buzz is awesome according to Ryan.

New sheets on his new bed.

New dress that fits "perfectly."

A New Christmas Tree

Since it is six months since we set up and took down the Christmas tree, I think it is an appropriate time to post pictures about it.................Not really, but I am finally getting around to it.

Lions, Leopards, and Snow

We went to the zoo back in February and it was so warm we didn't need the jackets we brought with us. The children and I had a grand time wandering around in the crowd, snacking for lunch, and learning to use Mom's new camera.

Dying Easter Eggs

A few years ago we discovered the children love to die, and eat, boiled eggs. So we have renewed that tradition at our house. I didn't quite use all three dozen eggs, but I used a lot more than we have in the past and the children had a blast coloring them.

Cousin Daniel Turns One

My sister's (Mary) oldest turned one in February, and we headed north for the party. We played in the snow, ate cake, and watched his fascination opening presents.

Family Easter Egg Hunt

We color coded the kiddos' eggs this year so they could find the ones just for them and everyone collected the same number of eggs. Bekah collected pink and purple. Ryan collected orange and yellow. Benjamin collected light and dark blue ones. It worked well and there was less squibbling about who got what or how many.
