We have had a series of thefts in our neighborhood over the last couple of years. It only happens once or twice a month, especially during the summer, but way too often for me to feel comfortable. I have been trying to teach the children to close the garage behind them unless we are in the front yard, and for the most part they remember. When they don't I tell them I don't want things stolen and they need to help us protect our stuff from people who would decide to take it because the garage is open. We have been fortunate not to have anything taken from our garage, and then yesterday Benjamin gave me a horrible scare.
Most mornings I go for a walk with Ryan in the stroller and the big kids ride their bikes. I have even decided to let Benjamin take two laps while we take one. He's really fast! Yesterday, Benjamin decided to come home between laps and switch bikes. I was moving a little faster than usual and he wasn't home when I came home. I panicked a bit when I found his bike and scooter in the garage and no Benjamin anywhere in the house. Much to my relief, he arrived home just as I was headed out to find him. After scolding him (yes, I scolded him) for changing his riding attire halfway through his ride, I told him how bad he scared me and why. I explained to him that of all the things someone could take from our garage, the thing I wanted to protect the most was my children. I was so scared someone had come in my house and taken my Benjamin because I had not kept him with me for the entirety of our walk. I think he realized, maybe just a little, why we have rules. More importantly, I think I was reminded of how important my children are to me and why I do the things I do. And, why I feel that rules and communication are important. I am so grateful Benjamin was okay and safe after I walk.
