Temple Square at 7 a.m.

On Monday, we dropped Dad off at the airport at 5:45 a.m. and then tried to find something to do until the zoo opened. Unfortunately there is not much to do at 6 a.m. in downtown Salt Lake besides drive around Temple Square and the Capitol building while waiting for the fast food places to open for breakfast. We also discovered that the McDonald's downtown has token operated bathrooms due to the high transit (homeless) population. Then, we determined that the gates at Temple Square open at 7 a.m., though the visitors' centers do not open until 9 a.m. So we went for a walk around temple square until the rain chased us back to our car and canceled our plans for the zoo.

The peaceful feeling on Temple Square was amazing even in the quiet hours of the morning. The children had fun looking at the temple, the fountains, the "blessing" statues, and the Christ statue. Benjamin asked to see the "blessing" statues specifically. It is amazing what children remember especially when the events happen so far apart because we haven't been to temple square since Christmas time.
We are grateful that Dad is home safe and sound.

When you say token operated bathrooms do you mean they hand out tokens with every meal or like you have to PAY to take a leak? Can the homeless spend some hard earned nickleage for a bird bath and an air dry?

Token operated: meaning if you purchase something they will give you a token at the counter to use the bathroom (if you request one), otherwise I guess you have to find somewhere else to use the bathroom.
